Loved by the motor trade

The Atlantic Road was originally planned as a stretch of railway, which came to nothing. Car enthusiasts, and the rest of us, can be glad of that today. It’s accessible all year round both for visitors and for those making advertising films.

Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Suzuki, Renault, Honda, Yamaha, Alfa Romeo, Ford and the haulage company Schenker (transportselskap): These are some of those that have filmed their advertisements on the Atlantic Road.

No surprise, then, that the British newspaper “The Guardian” has declared the Atlantic Road to be the world’s most beautiful car journey.

The Atlantic Road

The Atlantic Road meanders at the ocean’s edge, from island to island, across bridges and rock-fills. There are numerous attractive picnic areas where you can park to get even closer to the waves – a few steps and you can also cast a fishing line, if you wish. There are some excellent fishing spots. A stone’s throw to the west the shipping lane crosses Hustadvika, a notorious stretch of open sea. Many shipwrecks rest on the seafloor here. The Atlantic Road is especially fascinating when the autumn storms rage – large waves break right next to the road (and occasionally even wash across the asphalt). Road construction workers had to endure twelve hurricanes before the Atlantic Road could open in 1989! At the end of the 19th century, 120 people lived on these windswept islands. Their livelihood was fishing and production of dried fish.

Fishing village of Grip

Grip – a small fishing community with a dramatic history Grip lies 14 km off the coast near Kristiansund and consists of more than 80 islands of various size. The only populated island, besides Grip Island itself, is Bratthårskollen, site of the 47 metre high Grip lighthouse. Houses jostle shoulder to shoulder along the narrow streets of Grip Island. With its many boathouses and jetties, and with the old stave church perched in the middle of the island, Grip appears from afar to be a small town floating on the sea. During the summer Grip is populated by descendants of those who lived here year round, before the island was abandoned in 1964. Visitors will find a trip to Grip one of the most worthwhile summer excursions along the coast of Fjord Norway.
